In recent years, mathematics has become more central to excellence in science, technology and business, not less. It is widely understood that mathematical researchers need to adapt their focus to reflect these changes. However for a university to voluntarily lose capability in mathematics in today's climate signifies a rather implausible vision for the future and a likely lack of understanding of the true balance of costs and benefits. Someone needs to do their homework at Leicester it seems.

One thing that AI and deep learning is in need of is theoretical development in order to put the practical and algoritmic developments on a firm footing. So why not involve pure mathematicians rather than making them redundant?

There's no science nor technology or engineering without maths.
On the opposite, maths will persist without science, technology or engineering. This is a nonsensical and overall harmful move: desist and let maths persist,

This is very foolish and short sighted. Pure mathematics is often where real life problems have their solutions. For example, there are mathematicians who received their degrees in areas such as probability and statistics who are now using their expertise in modelling the COVD pandemic.

Making pure mathematicians redundant is totally insane. I wonder how one can think about making the mother of all sciences redundant!
I strongly object to this foolish move.

I was very disappointed to learn that the University of Leicester is planning on making its pure mathematicians redundant. As a data scientist, I can tell you straight away that "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" will all be made that much poorer by cuts to fundamental research in pure mathematics. These applied fields owe every achievement to the work of the pure mathematicians that came before us, and cutting the funding for these researchers would be counterproductive to your professed aims. This course of action, should you persist, will be damaging to your reputation amongst not just academics, but the astute students you'd hope to attract, who know better.

Mathematics is the foundation of clear thinking. It is not optional. This is a poor, shortsighted management decision based on short term goals that are congruent with the tenure of a VC but not with the life of an academic institution. Where will the current VC be when the real and devastating impact of this decision is finally felt at U. Leicester.

Unless there is research in Pure mathematics no new applications can arise. Pure mathematics is fundamental to any research in any branch of Sciences Pure or Applied.
