Mathematics is not redundant

Surely this is a short-sighted move, you will need pure mathematicians to teach an undergraduate maths programme which has any standing and mathematics programmes are the cheapest STEM programmes to offer.

A shortsighted plan - how can it lead to excellence?

Pure mathematics leads to results in other sciences. Cutting it is a sure way to go down the drain as a research university.

These applied faculty would benefit from open discussions with the pure research faculty being eliminated.

It seems that the people responsible for this decision do not understand what pure mathematics is and is not. They underestimate the role of pure mathematics in the advancement of the applied branches they wish to promote.

As a theoretical physicist I strongly believe that the significance of pure mathematics cannot be overstated. Please reconsider your decision!

I support the Math department to continue to do research.

This is outrageous, the research in Pure Math is among the most relevant research activities that any University can promote. History teaches us that to create good models for applications one needs to understand well the theoretical side, there is no applied math of good quality without pure math. Should we go over the many examples coming from Physics? No need!

I've had good collaborations with mathematicians affiliated with the University and have attended two great conferences there. Dismantling this environment is irresponsible and quite simply stupid

It's phasing out of scholarship itself with long term damage to society

Without "pure" Mathematics, there would be no advanced cryptography, and the "s" in the "https" on this webpage would not exist. Agree that the dichotomy between "pure" and "applied" maths is a toxic fiction.

Mathematics has been around as long as there has been human civilizations. Without even going into which may have come first, does it seem reasonable to try to remove it by the stroke of a pen, and then attempt to justify this by referring to a bunch of other disciplines that infallibly rely on mathematics?

I sincerely hope you will reconsider your decision to drop pure mathematics research at Leicester University and remove the threat of redundancy for the staff involved. Pure Mathematics is the most important area in the whole of science and your university and students need it badly. I fear the reputation of your university will collapse as a consequence.

Terrible decision with terrible justification.

This is wrong and short-sighted, as is apparent e.g. in light of the recent massive expansion of funding for mathematics at the UK level. As they themselves state, this is a free choice (and a bad one at that), not some kind of inevitable business outcome. In 2016 they tried another version of the same, which turned out to be of questionable legality. (I was working at the Maths department in Leicester at the time, so I witnessed all of that first-hand.) Back then the cull was eventually scrapped and the then-VC fired (or resigned or whatever). It is strange how the same idea keeps coming back for no objective reason. Almost as if some people just can't check their biases...

I strongly support the effort to preserve the pure math research at Leicester University.

I am a researcher in applied mathematics and more particularly in statistics and machine learning. I worked during one year at the departement of Mathematics & Statistics of Lancaster University. My skills and the ideas that I developp, as the ones of the PhD students in my field, closely depends of the discussion and collabaration with pure mathematicians.

It cannot be overstated how much research in the coveted areas will suffer, and how much worse off your students and reputation will be, without a full Mathematics department. Pure Mathematics is the literal backbone of AI etc, and is required to make fundamental leaps forward. This action sounds more like what happens if you bring in a load of consultants and accountants, blinkered by short termism, to a university and ask them to "improve" things.
