Already 5 years ago I decided that Leicester wasn't a place that anyone should apply to ever anymore. Shame on you Leicester!

Advancements in pure mathematics are vital to the advancement in applied mathematics and consequently other branches of sciences. For example, Without group theory, there would be no computers, and matters involving cryptography and security issues would be severely stunted. I sincerely request to withdraw the decision.

Extremely short-sighted decision.

The split between "pure" and "applied" mathematics is a toxic fiction - developments in "pure" research often allow fundamental insights and new tools for the "applied" mathematician to use. The short-term focus on currently fashionable applications should not be allowed to destroy fundamental research.

This is a terrible decision, very short-sighted. It will only damage the University of Leicester.

It is a shame for a university to claim that the basis of mathematics is superfluous

This is because of total misunderstanding the role of mathematics in the modern civilization and desire to replace human brain by AI as soon as possible. This is quite sad and dangerous.

Leicester has a strong maths department and its destruction would do lasting harm to your university.

Administrators love hiring, firing and glossy brochures explaining how they are leading us to the forefront.

The plan to cease research in pure mathematics is completely short-sighted. The quickly developing areas (like AI, data science today) will bring up others in a couple of years that will rely on other methods. Pure mathematics is a backbone that helps to ensure an appropriate academic level of research and teaching quality in the long run and to the benefit of newly arising methods in the future.

Pure Mathematics is the basis for many applications, including in the areas of AI and data science. Abandoning it will reflect badly on the University of Leicester in wider areas.

Fundamental and applied researches are of tremendous importance ! I strongly support all efforts to preserve research in pure mathematics at Leicester University.
