Mathematics is not redundant

Universities are meant to shelter a broad range of scholarly activity - especially those disciplines not supported by commerce. These gifts of knowledge and skill are then critically passed to the next generation. Such a short sighted act robs the future of foundational knowledge of our universe and the skills to seek new insights. It is telling that as Europe and the US become more intoxicated by the profits of technologies based on math and science fundamentals, they now cease to invest in the very fundamentals that brought their economies to such heights- and just as China seeks to expand research on fundamental math and science.

For a university to be taking such an anti-intellectual stance is difficult to compute. Do those thinking of taking this action have even The vaguest idea if the ramifications and applications of this research?

Such an ignorant and shortsighted decision from people who clearly don't know how teaching and academia work, and should clearly not be in charge of it. Good luck hiring "excellence" after such a move...

Fundamental research is at least as important as applicable research. Neither not exist in a vacuum; they support eachother. Devaluation of either to the detriment of the other. One cannot increase the yield of an orchard by cutting out the trees and building storage units for harvesting machinery in their place.

Extremely naive to think a university will be able to produce high quality "applied" graduate mathematicians without a fully functioning "pure" mathematics offering, which includes research. This decision will fail on its own criteria of success.

This is insane

More crass vandalism from managers with their own (non-academic) agenda and values.

We need mathematicians and historians to shape the future of humanity. It is short sighted to make those redundant who can help us learn and innovate

Blind short-termism that will lead to self-inflicted impoverishment. This case is stereotypical of the delapidation of scholarly values and intellectual know-how (in brief: civilization) that is being inflicted by so-called "stakeholders" having no true competence for leadership on academic communities.

Academia is a keystone institution of small-l liberal democracies. It serves the long term stability and growth of our society. Pure math research is not a luxury, it is foundational, and should not be held hostage by administrators seeking to chase a marketplace.

To think that one can advance Applied Mathematics without any thought to 'Pure Mathematics' is foolish. The two are inexorably linked and need eachother.

Without pure mathematics, soon there will be no advance in applied mathematics and no more advances in the application of Mathematics by the Sciences. SHort-sighted.
