The most short-sighted proposal I have seen in a long long time. I hope the upper administration will reconsider and correct the terrible mistake .

Could the University VC be encourage to reflect on the Bond Review (https://epsrc.ukri.org/newsevents/pubs/era-of-maths/)? For example, page 8: *Factors that have contributed to the increasing importance of MS in recent years*.

I am a Computer Scientist. I consider my work to be more applied than pure mathematics. And I cannot do my work without the assurance that I have a pure mathematics department at my univeristy

AI is still that much in its infancy that researchers so far not even managed to reproduce the intelligence of a simple insect like an ant or a bee, and I doubt that digitalization and data "science" are sciences worthy of being pursued at a university at all. -- Giving up research in pure mathematics in favour of these topics would effectively mean the partial suicide of the university as a respectable research institution.

"to ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" you need a strong base in pure math!!

Short-sighted doesn't even start to describe this appalling piece of blinkered decision-making. Pure mathematics is fundamental to knowledge creation in the sciences.

Shameful short-sightedness to cut off the roots and expect the tree to grow.
