To "ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" by ceasing research in pure math does exactly the opposite of what's intended. Seems misguided to me.

I took my Ph.D. from maths department of Leicester. I learned lots of things in this department which affected all my life. So I am against university decision about maths department.

There cannot be applications without pure mathematics! For future research identities, pure mathematics needed more than anything else!

I am a computer scientist and I think that "to ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" in your institution you need a strong mathematics department (both pure and applied!). All my support to the academics whose position is at risk.

They think they will do research in AI and big data without pure math? Not a chance!

Cutting an entire field of research from a department can not only destroy the reputation of the department but also removes a lot of the institutional knowledge. Adding a new stream of research (AI, computing and data science) shouldn't come at the expense of those whose field is key to further advances in the mathematics as a science just because their field is no longer "sexy".
To make such big changes during a global pandemic, where our country has one of the highest incidences of infection, that has major socioeconomic ramifications for the ability of the newly redundant staff to survive and seek new employment, is unconscionable.

Maths are never the problem, they are always the solution, maths are the base for any science, the University of Leicester VC is not aware about the mistake he is close to do.

Absolute decay. This is way how to destroy the state. I am surprised that such things happen in UK not in Latvia. If this is Russia project then I say: excellent project how to destroy UK.

It is incredible that such a short-sighted view can prevail in a modern university

I urge the university to think again. This is cruel action to take in the midst of a pandemic. Mathematics is a unity and to remove pure maths from Leicester will damage the quality and reputation of both research and teaching provision.
