Unacceptable. It is a responsibility of the VC and the SLT to manage their institutions effectively in times of crisis to safeguard long term academic interests of the society. Reconsider and Innovate. It is a disgrace to shut a fundamental discipline while teachers, parents and children struggle to continue learning and teaching during the pandemic crisis. Among other things, Leicester Mathematics has a rich mathematics outreach programme. I am sure the local community would be devastated about the loss.

Maths is a subject with deep links between all its sprawling branches. To deprive a maths department of its pure mathematicians is like teaching literature without an understanding of the language in which it is written. Please reconsider this embarrassing decision.

This is very sad. Pure maths is intrinsically valuable and underlies application areas such as data science.

Pure math research offers one of the highest return on investment because it is cheap and absolutely fundamental to any kind of applied STEM research.
Please stop being under the illusion that whatever areas you are trying to promote can be strengthened by cutting what you think if useless. Consider actually consulting with researches in Physics and Applied math and ask THEM just how fruitful interactions with pure math is.
Most graduate students in applied math are told to go and attend high level research level courses at pure math.
Where would they go in your department? Do you actually think that having a couple of lecturers without a research focused department will somehow increase the quality of your institution?
Just consider the many younger universities that go to great lengths to create a foster a department of pure sciences.
Finally, I have heard horror stories from people close to me that were researches working in the USSR. They tell about how everything that was not immediately "applicable" according to apparatchiks was cancelled or converted to "Scientific Communism". Some departments were saved but the damage was huge. Learn from the history's mistakes!

Quite apart from killing the idea of a university, such moves do not understand the paradoxical importance of pure mathematics and pure mathematicians to AI, etc.
In the parlance of our times this is a very dumb idea (and that is to say nothing about the individual faculty)

No one is fooled when rich administrators cut research positions. Canagarajah doesn't give a damn about scholarship, he just wants to fondle himself to the sound of 21st century online business buzzwords. Kick him out and keep these staff employed.

I studied pure mathematics as an undergraduate over 20 years ago. I still consider the ways of thinking I learnt then to be fundamental to almost everything that I've done subsequently even though my academic career is now in the social sciences. If Leicester contributes to the destruction of pure mathematics than the repercussions will be widespread and profound - across the university and beyond.

Innovation and fundamental science go hand in hand, one can not develop without the other!
