Research in pure mathematics is key for the whole humanity.

Pure mathematics is an essential prerequisite to data science and computational modelling. Leicester could choose not to have pure mathematicians, but should realise that by doing so, it would place itself in a lower tier forced to rely on pure mathematical research carried out elsewhere. Apart from the dreadful consequences for staff made redundant, it would be a certain way for the university to drop in the league tables.

This reasoning doesn't make sense, mathematics is foundational to AI, computational modelling, etc. The researchers in those fields will have an inferior research environment without mathematicians to talk to.

Mathematics is crucial for development of humanity. Neural nets were found in pure mathematics, and then they found application. Foundational research is if anything MORE important!

Universities which continue to promote the arcane notion that research in math is not fundamental to society doom themselves to future failure in other areas of research. Wolfram Benz wrote that "mathematical theory is often ahead of its time, and the abstract nonsense of yesterday underpins the applied mathematics of today". See https://theconversation.com/whats-the-point-of-maths-research-its-the-abstract-nonsense-behind-tomorrows-breakthroughs-64141. A 2012 study by Deloitte showed that the mathematical sciences have a tremendous impact on the UK's economy. See https://epsrc.ukri.org/newsevents/pubs/deloitte-measuring-the-economic-benefits-of-mathematical-science-research-in-the-uk/. These are only two of the many reasons that Leicester should reconsider their position.

Whether it's pure theoretical mathematics, applied mathematics, or computational modelling, all these fields are interconnected and it does not make sense to stop the support to one of them and say it's "redundant"

As an applied researcher in economics, I have to express my strongest doubts about this decision. Pure mathematics and applied mathematics, like AI and computational modelling, live from each other. One without the other, is like a heart without a lung. Seriously. Pure mathematics is the foundation of all insights in applied mathematics and extremely relevant: The only science that connects all other sciences and will definitely be relevant forever to come.

Artificial Intelligence, Computational Modelling, Digitalisation and Data Science all require considerable input from, and stimulate further research in, pure mathematics.

As somebody who works more on the applied side of science (condended matter), this is absolutely nonsensical! Those who try to eliminate pure math for the sake of "more useful" fields will in the end be left without either.

If this really happens, it will be the most stupid thing the university of Leicester has done in its history
