The pure mathematics of yesterday is embedded in the technology of today. Cutting funding to pure mathematics research is like cutting off one of your good legs. Sounds like an administrative decision by those with little understanding.

It sounds like the administration has gotten too carried away by buzzwords forgetting the foundational work that needs to be done to support these applications. Ridiculous and shameful!

This is a real shame. How can you conduct research in application without having something to base it on.

Shame on you .. your decision makes no sense at all!! How can you jump to the application without theory?!.
I cannot belive that this decision is made by who considered to be scientists, it must be a kid who hate math wrote it?!! or it is just a Silly joke?

Without pure mathematics, there will eventually be no mathematics and no meaningful physical sciences. It is very short-sighted to curtail fundamental research. It is not shaping for excellence, rather shaping for mediocrity.

Perhaps we should remember than many of the "practical" aspects of computer science (and other applications) depend heavily on old results of seemingly only pure maths interest. Randomly, fast fourier transform, the coding of first CD's, etc. If research in pure maths stops, the results needed in 100 years will not be there (OK, I exaggerate a bit, but not much).

Research in pure mathematics is basic to all mathematics and all subjects which use it. Computer Science started as pure mathematics in the 1930s, and much of theoretical computer science today is based on those ideas from the 1930s, which includes the work of Allan Turing in what was then called the "theory of computability". It also includes the work from the 1930s by Church, Kleene, Rosser, and Curry (to name just a few).
This proposal at the University of Leicester will seriously damage that university.

So shocking it is hard to believe it is true. This gives a new slant on fake news - what is fake here is the hugely mistaken perception that "pure mathematics" is not relevant to applied mathematics and data science and modelling and computing. Mathematics is essential to every other subject.

Pure mathematics research is valuable to an institution, their students, and to academia. The purported goal of research in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation, and data science would be hindered without cooperation from pure mathematics research.

I now work as a statistician, but my undergraduate training at Cambridge, UK was in pure maths, and it was **invaluable** for my career as an applied mathematician/statistician. There is no substitute for the kind of skills you can learn doing pure maths, and getting rid of pure maths researchers is an incredibly short-sighted plan that will do long-term damage to research in applied maths, AI, computational modelling, and data science.

Ceasing research in pure maths is a bad idea that will affect all aspects of maths, as well as CS, data science and AI specifically.

From practical and daily activities which were run during all those several millennia, the society learned how to extract knowledge and generalize processes. This evolution and abstraction led to pure science. Math is one of the best generalizations and reducing its investment affects this evolution. It's not only a short- but also a long-term investment. Also, an institution/land which is strong in pure science is located at a privileged position since their students will be delegated to the highest rank positions and jobs. AI (e.g., ML, DL, RL) is grounded in, among others, Optimization, which is grounded in Analysis, Topology, Calculus...

The proposed redundancies and conversion to teaching only positions lowers the quality of the degree programming and should not be undertaken
