Pure Mathematics has been the fountainhead from which all fields in this ridiculously named initiative ( and more) have drunk from for centuries. In a real sense, limitations of our understanding of mathematics set the ultimate ceiling for a lot of physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, economics, electrical engineering and statistics.

Shrinking research in computer science to areas which are currently in fashion is a huge risk. It is broad fundamental search that creates new areas.
Moreover our western societies need to invest in education, since low qualified jobs disapeared.

Last year we have found a surprising application in climate science of a recent method from "pure mathematics" (geometric group theory). Nobody expected to find such an application.
Shutting down math is shutting down endless possibilities.

A better strategy would be offering an intensive semester of machine learning for those students

Pure mathematics is backbone of all computational sciences. I understand arranging funds for research is hard, but this does not mean that a University should cease research in pure mathematics.
