Hard to believe that in 21 century there are so narrow-minded people in a position of power.

The proposed reduction is short-sighted since, as endorsed by Government, mathematics underpins a huge diversity of disciplines not only at undergraduate level. Furthermore, discoveries in pure mathematics continually find new and unexpected applications. Disbandment of the group, I believe , is a grave disservice not only to the University but also to the wider tax paying UK population.

"Pure mathematics" aka "theoretical mathematics" is a key discipline for data science and artificial intelligence, as recognised in the following statement from the Alan Turing Institute: "The Alan Turing Institute, headquartered in the British Library, London, was created as the national institute for data science in 2015. In 2017, as a result of a government recommendation, we added artificial intelligence to our remit. The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing are considered to be the key disciplines comprising the fields of data science and artificial intelligence." https://www.turing.ac.uk/about-us If Leicester removes research active pure mathematicians from its staff then it will weaken its education and research capabilities in computational modelling, AI, and data science.

This is insane, out of any logic and a massive step back. Especially considering that pure maths has contributed and contributes a lot to the development of AI (just to quote their motivation). Hope they step back.

It would be madness to eliminate pure mathematics.

On behalf of the European Mathematical Society we request that the Executive Board of the university of Leicester steps back from the plans to destroy mathematics at the University of Leicester.

Absurdly short-sighted. Pure mathematics is fundamental to innovation in the more applied subjects.

As a graduate (both for a B Sc and a Ph D) of the Leicester pure mathematics dept I feel that I must support this petition. A proposed staff of three (however good) for all teaching would be a poor substitute for the fine lectures and seminars I received admittedly some time ago now. Surely very few prospective students would consider this option when most other universities have a 'proper' teaching programme.

very shortsighted

The idea to give up basic research (for the gain of short term success) is a serious mistake: consider, for example, the disaster of Japan's 5th generation project. Such a stupid idea shows the frightening ignorance of the people in charge of making decisions, only.

This simply must not be allowed to happen. It is wrong on so many levels.

Pure mathematics provides the foundation for the subjects in the "future research identity".

Although not speaking as a mathematician, it is vitally important to continue research which challenges the fundamental theory that underpins practical applications in maths and science
