This is a shameful degradation of the value of higher education.

All universities need fundamental research, which as its name implies provides fundamental support to applied research (if not directly, indirectly).

Pure maths is underpinning and informing fundamental research in AI, these objective aren't sensible.

A university without a maths department or a foundational CS department, claiming to be a leader in AI. What a joke!

I am strongly opposed to this attack on pure mathematics at the University of Leicester. 'shaping for excellence' ~ political nonsense, words completely mismatched with actual action and result. I hope this proposal to cease research in pure mathematics will be thoroughly rejected!

A large proportion of potential undergraduates have always wanted the option of concentrating on the Pure Mathematics side, taught by staff working at the forefront. A small number of Universities who have done this in the past have realised the mistake, but found it much harder to recover what they have lost.

This is not shaping for excellence. It is crude hatchet work for a rapid decline into a sub-university institution

Setting mathematics aside to "ensure a future research identity" in anything related to CS is not only incredibly short-sighted but downright nonsensical.

Mathematics provides the foundation for practical research. Removing it from Leicester destroys the important foundation on which the currently more profitable research rests.
A university needs to show more resilience and patience!

I guess Leicester University doesn't understand that without advanced mathematics there would be no advanced artificial intelligence.
I'm a mathematician, and a new AI entrepreneur at the same time. Our company Torus Actions is doing very well, and we hire pure and applied mathematicians.

A horrible idea. It is only a few years ago that the University had a similar plan. That time, they claimed there were money problems and dropped the plan after this was shown to be not true; apparently this time, they just do this because they feel like it. They really must not care about their reputation as an employer AT ALL.

One day all or some of AI, data science, and computational modelling will become less trendy. Will then people will be fired again? Who would want to join UoL then unless for a short while? If universities do not do pure mathematical research, who will? Certainly, not companies. My experience shows that from time to time practitioners really need pure mathematical results. Who'll obtain them and pass their knowledge to practitioners?

Pure Mathematics is a fundamental basis for AI, Data Science, Optimization Theory. A strong base in Pure Maths. research strengthens these areas. To remove Pure Maths with the excuse that will allow AI and Computational Modelling to flourish makes as much sense as a surgeon recommending a cardiac transplant to cure a broken finger.

Really short-sighted decision; quite unbelievable from a university of such reputation.
