If this happens, the three teaching-focused lecturers will be in a very difficult position. This is experience from many places and faculties/departments.

Don’t forget pure maths started it all and is the base of everything

Pure Mathematics is essential to any Mathematics Department that expects to be taken seriously

An institution without pure math programs cannot properly call itself a research university.

If you want a strong computer science department, you need a strong math department.

All the things Leicester wants to encourage use pure mathematics done previously. Where is the evidence that pure mathematics will stop being useful?

Applied math simply does not exist without pure maths: they are both interrelated.

I'm in New Zealand, but some of my forebears came from the English Midlands, and I fully support this petition. Mathematics research surely needs to be encouraged, not dumbed down. Please do better.

History has shown that fundamental advances in mathematics and more generally science have huge impact. Pure mathematics is the core of Mathematics.

Pure mathematics is the foundation of all mathematics and scientific disciplines and with it comes a deeper understanding of the world around us. It has many important applications such as cryptography as well as linear algebra being the basis of quantum mechanics. Furthermore, pure mathematical proofs are the only remaining task that AI is unable to perform better than humans. The University of Leicesters Mathematical Centre has undoubtfully proven throughout decades its outstanding fundamental research capacity and and the removal of the centre will deprive the pure mathematical community of this brilliant research.
