This is upsetting news. Despite wanting excellence this University wants to cut the highly regarded and impactful research area pure mathematics. Not only does pure maths underpin everything we do in other mathematical subjects, but also areas such as physics. It speaks volumes that this subject is not appreciated.

Buildings and roads named after the great pure mathematician Michael Atiya (and ex chancellor) - this is how pure maths is treated now! Its isomorphic to surgically removing a limb

Sad to hear what the university is planning to do. STOP.

Whoever proposed this plan is clearly unfit for their administrative position at your respectable university. There should be a petition asking them to resign.

It is clear that this quite opposite to "shaping for excellence".

I signed one for Computer Science also. There is no science without Mathematics. Whomsoever comes up with these brain waves should really be the target of actions for efficiencies.

Removing maths is the exact opposite of "excellence".

Fundamental mathematics research laid the groundwork for artificial intelligence. This is a preposterous proposition.

I hope this plan will be reconsidered and changed to one based on a long-term perspective. It is necessary to balance theoretical/fundamental research and practical/applied research.

The decline of the research standard of Pure Mathematics will surely lead to The deterioration of Entire Science in the long run.

A strong department attracts both good staff and good PhD students and once the core staff is lost, few people would want to join, especially in the light of management choosing to make them redundant at any time. This part is different to industry because academics are interested in their research and publishing results, their employment is not just a job. Applied research draws on results from theory, most famously electronic commerce relies on cryptography which is made possible by the number theory, developed by mathematicians and initially believed to be useless in practice.
