No Math, No AI!

To teach a dog to fly, removes its legs. (I am not sure in fact, but legs can always grow back, right?). Just common sense, no need to understand dogs for this.

It would be a shame for the University of Leicester to cease research in pure mathematics.

Mathematics is the pilar of scientific proof, it is not redundant, nor is it useless.

This is a very bad idea, unless your plan is to have a second-rate university.

Pure mathematics is a fundamental and long-term investment.

To cut math in favor of data research. This is like dismantling railroads in order to build trains. Someone has to stop this madness.

Leaving aside any assertion that pure math is not worthy to exist simply because it is a subject of beauty and elegance (and it is a beautiful pursuit) I might point out how often pure math is used in the studies that the university wants to promote. Subjects in differentiation, integration and linear algebra are all topics of interest but they did not come from someone building an A.I, or even someone building anything remotely physical. It's also worth noting these subjects are difficult and student should learn them from experts, who can assist them best in those fields. I could see more merit in this plan if there was going to be a restructuring of class organization or focus but in reality this just seems to be a cut that the university thinks people wont notice, or wont care about.

No one can find the shock discoveries of tomorrow if no one has done the ground work of fundamental pure research today!

What a horrible and near-sighted mistake! The reputation of this university will be badly damaged...

This is anti-intellectual, and damages the reputation of Leicester beyond measurement. No competent person would take a job at this institution if they had any other offer whatsoever.

I am fighting the same cause of closing the maths department with 17 faculty 9 of which are full research professors in Ort-Braude College, Karmiel, Israel

Mathematics is such a fundamental subject for so much of science, including social science, that any serious University has to have a strong and broad Mathematics department.

Beauty is never redundant, and pure maths offers us that
