Studying mathematics and foundations of computer science is like exercising intellectual muscle to prepare for theoretical and applied work. Football players do not train by playing football all day, but training all parts of their body with specific exercises.
The approach of U Leicester will lead to graduates that at best are able to stick together ready-made software components without understanding how they work. I had this kind of people in research projects and they failed miserably. As soon as there will be new components implementing new techniques gradutes from such applied program will be at a complete loss.
Next time I am ask to take part in an evaluation and ranking exercise I know where to pay attention.

Terrible idea that shows no understanding of how theoretical research drives many of the most fundamental developments in many disciplines, including AI and computer science.
Incompetence at its finest.

While strategic thinking and bundling resources is important, shutting down pure math while trying to make AI and data mining a focus demonstrates a shocking ignorance of the inner workings of the disciplines

This seems to be based on a short-sighted and ill-informed plan and compromises excellence instead of furthering it.

A "future research identity" may be all well and good in these disciplines, but research doesn't exist in discrete boxes. Maths research underpins R&D in all of these areas. Surely a narrow sighted thought to cut it?

consider how ignorant one must be of the university function, to even propose such nonsense
