Such a shame, my son wants to do a maths degree and focus on the pure aspects….this does not fill me with enthusiasm for the course there

YASS. WE SHOULD LIKE US AS STUDENTS HAVE WAY TOO MUCH BON OUTN PLATE FURTHER TO KNOW HOW TO SOLVE X. THEY SHOULD BE TEACHING US HOW TO PAY BILLS OR SUMK.

The entire saga is an example of herd stupidity involving academics holding administrative positions.

This short-sighted abolition of mathematics is deplorable. The University of Leicester will suffer for it, as will its future students and Mathematics in the U.K.

Pure Mathematics is the foundation of all mathematical disciplines (AI, Computing, Applied Math, Applied Statistics, Data Science, etc) please retain this programme and its staff complement

Management's plan is penny-wise and pound-foolish. Pure mathematics research is necessary for the advancement of all knowledge.

Please keep pure mathematics going at University of Leicester and all other university. Maths is interesting for its own sake.

AI and CS come forth from pure maths and logic. To cut away those roots will wither the remaining research.

Ceasing research in pure mathematics is short-sighted.

Without Riemann studies in differential manifolds ( pure mathematics at time ) probably Einstein could'n create Relative theory. Without Gödel studies about logic ( pure mathematics ) Turing may not had write about Turing Machines and may not had created computer science. Without many researches about Number Theory (Pure mathematics again) cryptography could'n be developed. So pure mathematics could'n seen important now, but may be essential in future.

If not reversed, this decision will have a huge negative effect on the image of the University.

Inspirational pure maths teaching will still be providing the best grounding imaginable for tech careers when data science et al. are viewed as outdated buzzwords. Such teaching is also remarkably cheap: but it can only be provided by research-focussed mathematicians.

Its sad that we have such an immediacy issue that we forget where knowledge comes from. Without maths there is no Science or engineering
