The benefits of research in mathematics is not always immediately apparent and can be an investment for the future. Please don't be so small minded.

Researchers should engage in teaching, school should support both teaching and research, and pure and applied mathematics are important aspects of mathematics community. So reinstate and be whole at your school.

This move by administrators will gut a fundamental discipline at what will deserve to be called the ex-University of Leicester.

It is impossible to have a quality research program in mathematics without having pure mathematics. The position taken by University of Leicester is absurd and shows they clearly do not understand how mathematics research is done.

The rationale that has been given in the quotation here makes little sense. Those applications ultimately rely on a lot of pure maths (encryption without number theory, modelling without analysis, computational geometry without, well geometry?).

Support puremath and basic research.

This is an outrage and a dangerous precedent to be set.

Mathematics, including pure math, is even more important to the sciences and engineering than in the past. It is a huge mistake to chuck it.

Mathematics keeps growing in importance. To be blind to this shows unfathomable arrogance and lack of leadership.

Pure mathematics paves the way for future innovation. Without the research what will future work be based ?!

Mathematicians should be able to study mathematics.

What a shame!

This is extremely concerning. Mathematics teaches students how to problem solve in a general fashion and language which no other field has. No field replaces math.

Mathematics is the language for all the science. Even AI started reaching new heights after mathematician started taking part in it.

This is very short sighted.

What a sad decision, pure maths are the basis to so many scientific developments
