This plan will have disastrous consequences for the math department: students and mathematicians will steer clear of it, and research will dry up quickly.

Working in an industrial AI lab, it is my daily experience that strong AI research is impossible without excellent theoretical foundations. Great Innovations in AI do not come from blind try-and-error or practicioners’ inuition, but from a fruitful interplay between theoretical insights and experimental realizations.

Please reconsider your decision. Historically speaking, pure mathematics always proved to be very relevant ( please ask theoretical and quantum physicists). It ignited the minds of many applied scientists. It is an art. It is beautiful. Many applications of what is now considered as pure mathematics will be figured out in the future. Finally, all human intellectual endeavors in all fields are relevant and do have value . I believe that “redundancy” and deciding that a field of knowledge lacks real-life applications or value are very subjective due to limitations in our understanding of that field. I think such decision will open the door to questioning the value and relevance of many other academic fields in the future. I sincerely hope that your great and highly reputable institution would keep the funding and support for the half- god half -human beautiful minds that can process the most abstract concepts of our human civilization and heritage.

Math is the backbone of all other subjects. You must calculate everything you do. Pure Math is the mother of all Math. Nothing will make sense without Math.

Pure mathematics sits at the pinnacle of human intellectual achievement. To replace it by another discipline, on any pretext, is a retrogressive step and must be abandoned.

The pure math department are the only ones who will be capable of quickly switching their field when the AI revolution happens, get rid of the funding for everyone else as the mathematicians are actually incredibly flexible. So is pure math research it generally can influence many fields and is advantageous to future technology pursuits.
At the very least force the pure mathematicians to work on the complete formalisation of pure math to the point where AI can take over doing pure math. As we are not there yet and still need some pure math to be written in new ways for computers to be able to read.

It is a shame to cease research in pure mathematics, yet very essential in many fields such as genetics, physics, computer science, microelectronics, (...) I feel disgust in front of this decision which does not get us nowhere. The pandemic we have to face is just a hypocritical excuse.

This move is quite foolish. The areas of "AI, computational modelling, ... and data science" cited all depend on mathematics. One cannot predict what kinds of mathematics will be applicable how soon ... unless you have deep mathematical insights with which to make the prediction!
