Mathematics (and theoretical computer science) are fundamental to the very disciplines (AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science) Leicester wants to develop.

This is the kind of approach that makes students hate mathematics: they don't understand the fundaments. And, without mathematics, all the fields of knowledge lack the opportunity to acquire fundamental tools for their development

Reorganisation, a wicked way to manage human resources at the best of times, but more so when the University fails to recognise the nature of research.

Post-doc, University of Bologna How are we supposed to understand artificial intelligence if we do not understand the intelligence of maths?

There are many Universities in the US that made similarly short-sighted restructuring plans and are now suffering as they discover what their students(and as importantly their parents) really want is a solid foundational education. Cancelling you pure maths options is a mistake.

skipping math and TCS is stupid in the long term

So admin people at the University of Leicester are planning to make it a second grade University. Why ? Those admin people are precisely the ones that should be made redundant.

Before making this decision, I would suggest that the University VC consult with some experts in AI, computational modeling, and data science. I bet you'd find out that said experts oppose this plan.

Pure mathematics lies at the intersection of almost all applied sciences. "AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" would not exist without the efforts of pure mathematicians.

I can see that this risks causing a lot of damage to the department, and this comes from a direct competitor in terms of undergraduate students.

*Reference for formal dispute:* https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.04383 The field of data science is at high interdisciplinary connection with the field of "Operator Algebras" from the pure mathematics area.

short-sighted proposition, research doesn't work this way!

Those who believe in a long term research ecosystem without a strong investment in theoretical knowledge not directly linked with applications should look at history.

ou will struggle "to ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" without a solid base of new knowledge in pure mathematics. What they mean is we will get academics churning out software that simply rejigs existing output "in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science" and try and flog it to industry, probably at below real economic cost.
