Pure Mathematics is an essential part of research, innovations and discoveries in countless fields of activity. Essentially it's inclusion frees the mind of obsessive focus on a narrow target.

The "visibility" of AI and data science is mostly buzzword-based, amplified by tech firms such as IBM which profit from them. Many technical directors in the service industry came to me complaining that ML does not hold the promise of the associated mediatic communication. What will your department look like when the buzzword craze blows over, if you remove mathematics and FOCS? If budget obliges, it would be much smarter to resize rather than remove these departments.

I am shocked.

Theoretical maths are the basis of all encryptions systems in the world. Theoretical maths ARE useful. What a pityful lack of academical culture from this political direction.

The idea to stop Pure Maths Research at Leicester falls into the same category as Brexit: Ignorant, short sighted and stupid.

We need basic research in pure math that supports data scince

Pure mathematics is one of the fundamental pillars of human advancement. It is foolish to cut it down. The whole education-research system will crumble!

This plan is vicious. And even on its own vicious terms, it's bound to backfire: without Pure Mathematics, the University of Leicester will not be considered a serious institution for research in any area of Mathematics.

I am signing this petition in solidarity with the students and staff at Leicester university. Were it not for that then I'd not mind Leicester trying their silly plan and learning the hard way why pure mathematical “foundations” are “fundamental” to mathematics as a whole, as well as all the natural sciences, engineering, and computer science.

This is simultaneously a ridiculous and barbaric plan.

The undersigned would strongly request that the University of Leicester reconsiders the decision to cease research in Pure Mathematics.

Formal methods and mathematics are core to applied research in computer science (AI, IoT). These academics and researchers are very much needed by UK Universities.

Shame to those aiming to close the research positions in Pure Math. Foundational things must be promoted: not only they underpin applications, they are our common cultural heritage.

Mathematics is fundamental science, I don't understand how they want to research AI without pure mathematics...
