Applied Maths without Pure Maths is like Physics without Maths. Or Music without instruments.

Mathematics is really the base of all science, and proper knowledge and skills of the subject is the preliminary for research in any science, but in particular, the four research areas the University wants to excel in. Removing research in pure mathematics would be like cutting off a lake from a river. Without the water source, the lake cannot grow but will evaporate rapidly.

The UK needs a diverse community of research mathematicians of all flavours, including that referred to as `pure'. Leicester's contribution at the interface of algebra and topology is unique within the UK and should be cherished.

Pure mathematics is not just abstract nonsense. Pure mathematics is the frontier for developing new techniques, models, and objects that could eventually prove immensely useful in these exact fields. And, even if not, why restrict the pursuit of knowledge?

It is laughable to suggest that you are going to support research in AI by cancelling research in mathematics.

UKRI just made a 300 m award to mathematics...
Pure mathematics, applied mathematics, probability theory and statistics form the backbone of science, and any reputable institution like Leicester should support basic science.

Why don’t we close every UK academic department that doesn’t make a lot of money for the sake of those that do? Look around you Leicester! Name one serious university in the UK or elsewhere that has no representation of pure mathematics.

World class computer scientists and AI statisticians want to be close to an excellent maths department.
This is so short sighted -- first sack the pure mathematicians, then the best applied mathematicians & statisticians will leave, then the computer scientists will be next.

If I were a member of the board and trying to think of a way to completely tank the reputation of my university and ensure future hires were of low quality, this would the plan I would come up with.

If this destruction of pure mathematics at the University of Leicester really happens, the University should be forbidden to use the name of Michael Atiyah for one of their buildings!

I am frankly astounded at the stupidity of such an action. I cannot think of a single respectable university world wide which is not exclusively social sciences/arts based and which does not have a thriving mathematics department. Such a move is a taking many steps back from excellence rather than any step toward it. Especially given the 300 million pounds of additional funding awarded by the government for mathematical sciences (pure mathematics is very well represented in the advisory group for the same).

Maybe "...to ensure a future research identity" means
"...to ensure a future research income identity". Whatever it is, why on earth would it imply to cease existing research that is well connected to the new one?
I like pure math. High school student
