40+ years in operating systems and networks, now in pure math (cat. th.). your read of the labor market is ... ok, but still wrong. more commodity coders is not a win.

Relegating mathematical research to a mere tool for computer science greed is a short sighted decision-after all, it was pure mathematicians who discovered and developed computer science!

The stated goals of building a research identity in mathematical fields is severely handicapped by the absence of theory to inform, justify and interpret results and, importantly, new techniques. My own field of computational modelling would be impossible without a solid theoretical foundation (and yes, we do use results from category theory in practice).

A very shortsighted and nonsensical decision. Significant parts of the areas the University wants to expand are underpinned by research in pure mathematics!

Setting aside for a moment the short-sightedness of proposing cuts to an excellent department in the middle of a global pandemic, this is also a decision that makes absolutely no academic and scientific sense.
The only sensible action would be to scrap this "excellence" plan and start over.

Pure mathematics has been an integral part of scientific advancement in nearly every field through history. To erase the pure mathematics department is to admit you are not interested in being a scientific research institute, and you should not be allowed to label yourself a university.

There is nothing like pure or applied math. It's just in our minds. So if you really respect mathematics then don't do it.

To ensure a future research identity in AI, pure maths is an essential building block. It is outlandish and short sighted to cease research in this area

Discarding Pure Mathematics for the sake of something fashionable/marketable is extremely short-sighted, and will undoubtedly tarnish Leicester's international reputation as a research institution. Many of the world's top research and learning institutions have a strong emphasis on Pure Math *and* Computer Science, they are not mutually exclusive.

The areas AI, computational modelling and date science require a large input from pure mathematics. Cutting research in fundamental science is simply stupid.

Even if it was wise to align a university's research profile with current buzzwords -- which it is not -- these particular buzzwords all fundamentally require good research and teaching in pure maths.

This is a disgraceful proposal and incredibly short sighted. The reputational damage will be twofold - treating staff abominably and removing a key area of research,
Don’t do this to your staff, don’t do this to yourselves, Leicester
