The benefits students gain from an education in pure mathematics, provided by active researchers, are crucial to the development of science and to their ability to reason clearly and precisely in all areas of life. Ending all pure mathematics research at Leicester will destroy the benefits that all sciences gain from having students and colleagues trained in the careful justification and abstract reasoning that pure mathematics teaches. This move is short-sighted and destructive.

There are many excellent mathematicians in this department, including several whom I know and respect. To discontinue their positions in this way is unprofessional and short-sighted.

Pure mathematics is part of the incredible pyramid that begins with pure mathematics, and ends with new technology and understanding. Taking away pure mathematics takes away the foundation, which eventually leads the pyramid to crumble. This is short-sighted, and ignorant.

It's difficult enough to hire top people in AI and data science given the competition with industry - I have no idea how Leicester thinks they will be able to attract anyone to a university without a mathematics department.

The University of Leicester has an old and respected mathematics department. Elimination of research mathematics shows an unfortunate narrowness of understanding on the part of those who propose such an idea.

As a mathematician by training, and a statistician for the majority of my career, I can surely appreciate that pure mathematics is the absolute foundation for all other branches of maths and all computational disciplines. I truly hope that the competence and common sense prevail, and that dangerous decision will not go forward.

A College of Science and Engineering without research/research led teaching in pure mathematics is not a college I'd recommend to any potential student.

This is completely backwards. The lack of pure maths research is what is actually holding applied computer science back.

Innovations in pure mathematics have consistently led the way in other subjects areas, even if we don’t see the results straight away: complex numbers and matrices were invented long before their use in quantum mechanics which revolutionised physics. It’s madness to abolish pure mathematics research.

There are institutions that teach without research: high schools, trade schools, teaching universities. They pay, however, their administrators way below the pay scale of research universities.

This is clearly counter productive to all future research pure and applied, as Applied Research is built off of Pure Research, and alternatively Applied Research often inspires Pure Research.

An extremely bad plan.
