This is absolutely fine, as long as Leicester wants to become a Polytechnic University. The leadership has to be open and honest about this and declare that they have decided to transform to a polytechnic.

Pure mathematics is only unusable until we find an application for it. My research seems weird now but I think it may be able to help engineers one day.

This is a shocking proposal. Fundamental research must be protected. Worse, redundancies of academic staff will have dire consequences for the UK as a competitive location to attract scientists, not only in pure mathematics. "Permanent" positions in Pure Mathematics in the UK routinely attract many outstanding candidates. However, job security is a key aspect in enabling researchers to pursue ambitious research programs. If it becomes clear that "permanent" positions in fact hold no such security, the competitiveness of the UK in attracting leading researchers to its institutions is going to be diminished

A very shortsighted move.To develop leading edge applications in AI, Data Science and Maxine Learning require input from Pure Mathematics otherwise the department will just be following the flock.

The colleagues in Leicester have my strongest support.

This tarnishes the reputation of Leicester. Pure Mathematics is fundamental. Even the UK's Bond Report states the heavy value of pure mathematics in order to support the future of AI and adjacent disciplines. This is short-sighted of Leicester.

This proposal is `shaping for mediocrity', not `shaping for excellence'. Previous attempts to close down Pure Mathematics research in Leicester were rightly resisted by my friend and former colleague Ken Edwards when he was Vice-Chancellor; I am dismayed to learn that the present University administration is not of the same calibrfe.

I support my colleagues at Leicester, and hope this mistake can be avoided.

I strongly support this petition; the threatened decision could not come at a worse time.

What a pity. Every good university invests in pure mathematics. What does this change mean for Leicester's future position in the world?

This is obviously absurd.

Full support. This just seems a bizarre and really quite stupid plan.

This is absurd and sad.

I’m a computer science person and even I think this is a bad idea.

We struggle with the ongoing pandemic, because epidemiology is not yet a proper science, but needs justified mathematical solutions

I studied pure mathematics in my undergrad and now I am a doctoral student studying quantum computing and AI. That would have been impossible for me without a background in pure math and logic, your program ideas are severely flawed.

There is an old epigram "they make a desert and call it peace". It was not meant to be a recommended course of action.

The more to get rid of pure mathematics is justified by the need for computational mathematics and data science. Lots of applications in todays world depend on pure mathematics research from the past (including, for example, topological data analysis). Pure mathematics is very important for the long term future of all of mathematics, and therefore basically all sciences. It is also essential to deliver any meaningful degree in mathematics. Any move to get rid of pure mathematics will be seen as a big mistake in the future, similar to previous moves to e.g. get rid of statistics in the past.
