Well I'm happy with existing technologies, especially if it means we're gonna leave math. And plus, not everyone wants to be a big technology celebrity person like Steve Jobs or something.

The utility of pure mathematics is not merely measured by how you can apply it to the real world. Pure mathematics is much more than that! Moreover, the development of pure mathematics has led to the development of most modern technologies. To abandon pure mathematics is to abandon the development of these technologies!

I graduated in maths at Leicester University many years ago (1970). At that time Leicester had a strong presence in pure mathematics with Reuben Goodstein being a leading figure in mathematical logic and Roy Davies being held in high regard in analysis. Many other members of the academic staff also made a significant contribution to Leicester's reputation in pure mathematics. It would be a great pity if such a heritage were to be set at nought. What is being planned for the mathematics department is a tragedy and will do significant damage to the university’s reputation.

As a mathematics student, it is unfortunate that people with authority are bearing down their self-concocted prophecies on what is of utility and what is not.... When evidently anyone with an understanding would know the vast importance pure math has as the Bedrock of all sciences....

Pure Mathematics has to go on. Pure Mathematics is as important as applied mathematics. Universities cannot be about money making.

What's next? Sack everyone else who can invent things? Rely on existing tools for the forseeable future, and the problems that will come? Sounds like a fantastic plan to waste peoples' time and money into the future

It is a terrible feeling to realize this short-sightedness is even being considered by respectable authorities. Has the human mind now exhausted all the Mathematics there is to know? We have barely scratched the surface really. Yet look at the so many applications of Mathematics so far, most of which are still only using the Mathematics of previous centuries!
Mathematics is important
I don't have an opinion of this.
