Maryknoll Civil Air Patrol Squadron Changes Without Transparency

It would be a huge disservice to the people in CAP to get rid of it !!

I have been apart of the Maryknoll Cadet Squadron since August of 2016 and have attended both the meetings and the classes offered on Friday nights and during regular classes in Maryknoll High School. As a cadet and as a student I have learned life lessons that I will never forget from my leaders and teachers that have transformed me into the person that I am today. I have made wonderful friends through this program, friends that I will forever remember and cherish. Because of this program I have been able to take major steps into accomplishing life goals and push myself to accomplish more than I have ever thought that I could. It's because of this program that I have been to Washington D.C. and New York for Legislative day and to Fremont, Nebraska for a National Flight Academy.This program has done so much for me in these past 3 years and it greatly saddens me that there is a possibility that it can be changed and taken away. Especially because the younger cadets won't be able to experience what I have gotten to experience from this amazing program. This program is made for and ran by the cadets and a change in how this squadron operates could jeopardize the experience and lessons that they could learn. As a Senior in High school I am in my last year in the cadet program and so if changes are made to this squadron it will affect me slightly, it'll really affect the newer and younger cadets the most. So in the interest in keeping the program that has made me and my friends and fellow cadets the people we are today I ask that the program does not change and stays how it currently is.

Keep the program. It is the best subject/club at Maryknoll in my opinion.

Removing the CAP program from Maryknoll will create a negative impact on EVERYONE! Very disheartening to hear and see this happening. Please work on an amicable solution ASAP!

My son just joined Maryknoll’s Civil Air Patrol unit this year as a 10th grader. He has been so enthusiastic about being part of the team and has been trying to recruit all of his friends. As a parent I love the fact that he can go to the meetings right after school and that I don’t have to worry about transportation. It’s a huge convenience to know that I can pick him up after work and I don’t have to wait around for hours. I am very disturbed and disappointed by the process in which the Hawaii Wing Commander has issued a command changeover and has disrupted the program mid year without sufficient notice. I feel the commanders notification to the parents and not to the school first was inappropriate and very unprofessional. There should have been a meeting with the school heads and squadron leaders in private as well as have a clearly defined plan of action so that the school has time to make the necessary changes to their program. The parents, school and squadron did not seem to be a concerning factor for this plan of action which I believe is an essential element when deciding on such extreme change. I strongly suggest a STAY until further discussion and a detailed plan could be achieved.

CAP at Maryknoll is excellent. May it continue to thrive for the benefit of our community and the whole CAP community.

Please do not get rid of this petition mid year. It deprives students of their education, some prohibiting them from graduating.

I recommend to delay the Change of Command issue and not to disrupt the CAP program at Maryknoll School until the end of the school year allowing time to provide clarity on plans for the Maryknoll Squadron and come to a resolution that is in the best interest for the cadets.

I am so deeply disappointed with this whole situation and how a leader of CAP, namely Col Lonergan, can actually be doing this. Isn’t one of CAP’s missions to teach our kids moral leadership? Isn’t moral leadership about developing others? So, if this is one of CAP’s missions, why is Col Lonergan trying to make drastic changes mid-year and risk the development of the cadets? For pete’s sake, make the changes after the year is over! These students have worked so hard and the benefits have been life changing! For someone to come and even propose a mid-year change is not in alignment with the CAP mission. Col Torres has been such a huge inspiration and role model to my son! Col Torres should remain with this program. He truly has the program and cadets at the center of his efforts. You can just hear it whenever you talk to him. He is the most influential and hugely positive role model for my son and others. How can anyone replace someone like that? How can anyone not see it? Col Lonergan’s decision does not have the kids in mind and is not setting an example for moral leadership. I never voice negative opinions online ... EVER! But after reading what is going on... Col Lonergan, you need to reflect on this and really think this thru. What you are doing is a classic rookie mistake. I assume you are not a rookie and should have the experience to know better. Please reconsider and at the very least - don’t make drastic changes mid-year. At least let the seniors complete what they started and allow them to reach the goals they had set at the onset. I urge you to reassess.

Very discouraging to see this happen to a great program and mentors at Maryknoll CAP program. Sorry to hear and see this going on.

COL Lonergan’s response only highlights the great job Maryknoll’s cadre are mentoring our children. Maryknoll’s integration of CAP into their Mx (STEM) program has benefited those Maryknoll Squadron cadets that are not students of Maryknoll through the their CAP detailed training plans and schedule meetings. “...while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace/STEM education and helping shape future leaders through CAP’s cadet program. Recommend a delay in Change of Command date of 18 Oct and that the Hawaii CAP Wing’s leadership, Maryknoll’s Squadron cadre, and Maryknoll’s school leadership meet to discuss all concerns. When looking for high schools to attend 4 years ago. Maryknoll was one of those schools. My son chose Maryknoll because of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) program. CAP develop his confidence and leadership skills. It also helped in deciding his career path. Especially since it has been part of his curriculum these several years. Please don't take this program away from the school (young adults). Keep it where it's at. Why fix something that is not broken. It will have a negative impact should you take CAP away from Maryknoll.
