Every year 20.5 million Americans 12 or older deal with a substance use disorder and 2 million had a substance use disorder involving prescription pain relievers. Purdue Pharama for example does not advertise their full side affects of their products, leading the cause of the opioid epidemic we are currently dealing with farther and farther. We need to see pharmaceutical companies who are advertising these drugs fully explain the causes and effects and consequences. What users beginning on these opioids don't know is what these drugs really are besides a "pain reliever." Opioids also activate reward regions in the brain causing the euphoria or high that underlies the potential for misuse and addiction. Companies need to realize the epidemic they are starting and the effects of positively marketing these drugs and how it's effecting millions.
