This is a petition against the recent changes to the gym hours on Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, SC. Effective Febuary 1st 2015, the gym will be open 0400-2000 Mon- Fri, 0900-1500 Sat, & 1300-1700 Sundays. Being that this gym is located on a Marine Corps base, you would think that it would be open 24/7, right? Wrong. Working a Saturday or Sunday shift? You can plan on skipping the gym those days. But, wait, aren't Marines supposed to be combat fit & combat ready? You would think with that with combat readiness being thoroughly instilled within a Marine from the second you step onto those yellow footprints on Parris Island that physical fitness would be amongst the top priorities in the Marine Corps. Marines have to pass both physical & combat fitness tests in order to remain in the Corps, but they haven't a gym with accomodating hours to use to maintain these standards of excellence? These men and women risk their lives for our country, have uprooted their families from duty station to duty station, they go overseas & leave loved ones behind. They work long hours, weekends, holidays, stand 24hr duties, and can go from working day shift to nights within a matter of one day. But we cannot provide gym hours to work with their demanding schedules? I surely do not believe it is too much to ask to provide a gym with hours as flexible as these marines are with their work schedules.
