As it stands right now, school counsellors are not required to be present within the Pennsylvania School District. This means that K-12 schools may not have guidance counsellors inside their school walls. This is a problem. With recent school shooting events and teen suicide rates reaching an all time high, children need someone around them who they can feel comfortable talking to. School Counsellors are trained to notice signs of depression and/or dangerous tendencies. Please help mandate school guidance counsellors in the Pennsylvania School District to further protect our children so they are properly supported throughout childhood and their teenage years.

I really started this thinking it would just be a conversation among a few neighbors but the stories you are sharing in the comments have truly humbled me. Please know that I am reading every single one of them and they are fueling the letters I am writing to our local representatives.

I truly never imagined that so many people would care about this issue as deeply as I do. This momentum belongs entirely to the community that stepped up to speak for our students when I thought I was just shouting into the void.

RIDICULOUS that this isnt already a law. our kids are falling through the cracks and we are just letting it happen.

my daughter has been struggling so much lately and there is literally no one at her school for her to talk to. this has to change now.

Teachers have way to much on their plates already to be expected to handle mental health issues too. we need professionals in every building.
