We are running out of time!! Spread this ipetition link so we can get NYSP & Governor's Attention to change the Malta Barracks Location!
Those signing this petition are in opposition to the continuing plans to build a NYS State Trooper barracks on the four acres of woodland between the houses on May Apple Way and Dunning Street in Malta.
The choice of this wooded area as the site for the barracks is wildly inappropriate. The proposed 6,000 square foot project is more than twice the size of the residential buildings it will abut. The barracks, parking lot, lights, and cell tower will literally become the backyard of the houses along May Apple Way. The walking path along Dunning Street will be disrupted in order to provide automobile access to the barracks parking lot: the increased traffic in and out of the lot, as well as along Dunning Street, will render the walking path virtually useless to residents. In addition, at a time when the environmental importance of green spaces is finally being recognized by most people, this project has been designed to eliminate such a green space.
Despite the clear opposition of the Luther Forest residents, the implementation of the plans continues. This is both unfortunate and unnecessary: alternative sites have been generously offered, so that the barracks can not only remain in Malta, but also be located in an area that will serve the needs of the troopers and the residents.
As of this point, the alternative sites have been rejected and the voices of the affected residents dismissed. Therefore, in protest, we sign and submit this petition, to reiterate our opposition and to demand that those who have the power to do so listen to the people and move this project to a suitable, logical location.

I spent the afternoon walking the property line where they plan to clearcut those woods and it feels even more wrong in person. The noise and lights of a station do not belong inches away from our living rooms when there are clearly better spaces available. We are currently scouting other land options to present to the state so they have no excuse to keep pushing this location.

One hundred of us have already signed to protect the woods behind our homes. It means everything to see my neighbors stepping up because we are all tired of watching our backyards disappear.

This is not a suitable location. It would be disturbing a residential neighborhood and a busy walking/bike path. Explore the options.
A more prudent location would be closer to I-87 for ease of access on and off the Highway for a quicker response for emergency calls. There is plenty of land adjacent to the YMCA or Medical facilities just off of exit 12.
Placing the police barracks in a family-oriented housing development is a foolish idea. There are so many areas in Malta better suited for this. Why don’t the politicians ever think through a decision, including asking the people who pay their salaries and will be affected by the decision, before acting?
The barracks should not be at the entrance to a residential neighborhood., where so many trees would need to me cut down. There are other more suitable spots in the town that could accommodate the NYSP, be more readily accessible, and would not destroy a forested area.
I live in Malta. I am disgusted by the lack of transparency on the part of the state troopers as well as the previous board of the Town of Malta. It’s nauseating to see one wooded plot after another cleared and obliterated.
No to the new barracks location!
I have deep concerns about a trooper barracks going up in our neighborhood. On top of cutting down forests and turning that area of dunning into a strip mall looking area, I already deal with state Troopers flying up and down dunning Street without their lights on with complete disregard for pedestrians. That traffic circle by fox wander has heavy foot traffic with kids and families biking and walking, many times I've had to stop because of state troopers speeding to go into the tech park or looping over to plains road. Will there be 24 flood lights shining in the backyards? Although I support law enforcement, the state troopers who work in this area have no sense community. They aren't friendly when we encounter them in local shops. I have no desire have our woods clear cut, 24/ hr parking lot lights causing light pollution and for even troopers to be zipping up and down dunning Street without a regard or respect for the community the serve. It's insane that instead of picking a commercially zoned area, they are wanting to place this in. Neighborhood. When a bike rider gets blasted by a trooper flying down dunning at night and the complaints start coming in about noise and light pollution then maybe the state will understand just how much this is unwanted.

I am a resident of Luther Forest for 41 years and a retired employee of the Town of Malta and I am very concerned with what's happening to the forest. When are the clearing of the trees going to stop. That's why my husband and I moved here.
