We, the public, who use the Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail, bus riders and pedestrians crossing Orangeburg Road in Sparkill NY, urgently request and demand that the NYS Department of Transportation address the unsafe conditions at the intersection in Sparkill of the 4 roads and Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail: Orangeburg Road, Main Street, Highland Avenue and South Piermont Avenue. This Intersection is the exact location that the Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail continues North and South and requires users of this trail, whether on bike, running, or walking to cross Orangeburg Road while monitoring traffic from Orangeburg Road, Main Street, Highland Avenue and South Piermont Avenue all at the same time. It is impossible to see the driver traffic lights to see if the light is red, yellow or green and there is no pedestrian crossing light, crosswalk button or any way for pedestrians walking on the sidewalks or using the Rail Trail to know when it is safe to cross or have the lights change in favor of safe crossing. We the people who have signed this petition are requesting and demanding that there be immediate action taken by the NYS Department of Transportation and any other involved authority, to install pedestrian crossing safety measures, such as but not limited to, a pedestrian crosswalk light with walk and don’t walk sign and a button to request the ability to cross the road at the north and south entry of the trail AND on the street sidewalk (east part of Main Street and North part of Orangeburg Road and Main Street). The Rail Trail is an essential part of the communities quality of life and health. Being a pedestrian in our community whether getting on or off the bus safely at this intersection or crossing streets safely is also important to this community.

In the intersection is very dangerous. Cars are coming from five different directions. There is no light or right away for bicyclist or pedestrians. We need designated caution, lights, and signage the gives bicyclist and pedestrian, safe passage. Sharon Forman

This is actually a 6-way intersection and should have traffic lights reflecting that fact. I was nearly hit by a car while crossing here once myself.

I am scared every time I have to cross this intersection with my children when we're walking or biking the rail trail. There has to be a way to make this safer!

I walk this trail all the time and see cars , walkers, and families on bikes try to navigate this intersection. With no cross walk to allow safe passage, folks make a mad dash across when the hope it’s safe because they clearly cannot see if a car is coming.

This is a wide staggered intersection, and it's impossible to tell when the lights will change and cars will start accelerating towards you when you are halfway across. After a relaxing run along the dirt trail away from the roads it's a rude awakening to suddenly find yourself in the middle of a busy roadway, and seems quite unsafe no matter how careful you are.

The walk up from the Sparkill bus stop to Overlook Apartments is incredibly dangerous, from that intersection up Highland. I feel I am taking my life in my hands walking home every day, especially now that it gets dark so early.

There is a definite blind spot that is impossible to navigate from one street while they have the green light

This intersection is very dangerous. It is in the best interests of the town and county to ensure a safe crossing and further promote off road trails.
