WE DID IT!! THE SGC OFFICIALLY APPROVED THE EXCUSED ABSENCE FOR ELECTION DAY AND STUDENTS NOW HAVE THE FREEDOM TO VOTE WITHOUT STRESS!! THANK YOU TO THE 516 OF YOU WHO BACKED THIS VISION BECAUSE WE ARE ABSOLUTELY UNSTOPPABLE!!!
Hi everyone! Agnes here :)
Me and a few others are drafting a bill and hopefully presenting it to SGC on October 5th that will ask IC to make November 3rd (Election Day) an Optional Excused Absence Day! This would mean that Students would have the right to be excused from class if they prove they are voting on Nov 3rd itself, or have voted prior to that! Proving this would result in them being excused from every class for that day so they can have enough time to vote, get others voting, and prepare for the outcome since it will be anxiety inducing!
We are doing this because we not only want everyone to vote, we also want you to feel safe doing so —physically AND mentally!! While it’s too late to ask IC for a holiday, we truly believe this is the next best thing!!!
Please sign and please support!! Thank you so much!! Let me know as well if you’d like to co sponsor this bill by dm-ing me on insta!! Thanks so much again!!
WE ARE TEARING TOWARD 500 SIGNATURES AND NEED THE FINAL PUSH TO BLOW PAST THIS TARGET!! GET THIS LINK OUT TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW RIGHT NOW SO WE CAN BRING MAXIMUM ENERGY TO THE SGC!!

Love the thought, would hate for classes (be it taking them, or teaching them) to stand in the way of anyone’s ability to vote.

As a parent of a new Freshman I totally support this idea and hope schools across the country create similar opportunities for students to actively engage with voting and elections on all levels.

Not only is it important to vote, but my state is low on poll workers due to covid and I want to be able to work that day.

As a student at Ithaca college, I believe the school should prioritize voting and incentivize students, faculty and staff to vote by giving them the day off. Many people still have to go to the polls this year and do not qualify for an absentee ballot in their state. This year is a special year because we are not centered around campus and people need the day off to vote in their hometowns

We need the ability to exercise our rights to vote without academic repercussions. Without this, students will have to choose between academic success and civic duty, and I don’t think the college wants to stand in our way of exercising our rights. If the college DOES want to stand in our way, they should make that explicit.

With many students back in our home states, many of us are opting to vote in person. With expected record-breaking long lines at polling places, it is reasonable that students be allowed to participate in their elections without also worrying about attending classes.
