Make Cherry Avenue Extension Safe

I strongly support the petition to reduce speed at Cherry Ave extension.

Agree and support all elements of this petition. I have two grandchildren who drive on 140 to the BCHS every school day. This is long overdo!

I hope this can help with the wildlife as well, protecting them while keeping the people safe also. There should not be people dying because of unsafe roads. This needs to be fixed.

It is most important to reduce the speed limit, add access to the Rail Trail and bring the extension to current safety standards. We utilize the Rail Trail frequently and the access via the extension is very dangerous. Let's not wait for a tragedy to enact change. Thank you neighbor Dan for moving this important initiative forward.

Cherry Ave. Extension speed limit is too fast. Very difficult to access from side streets. Not safe for such a short distance within town

I agree with decreasing the speed limit to 45 mph. When I try to get on Cherry Ave. Ext. from McCormack Road South it is often very difficult to get out safely between oncoming cars. I do not support another roundabout, though. I believe the four roundabouts that currently exist are more than enough. There must be a better solution than a roundabout. I believe decreasing the speed limit and enforcing it will make this section of the road safer.

Thank you for doing this. I've been worried about this for a long time. There is no reason the speed should be 55 in this section and there have been accidents from time to time because pulling onto the extension from McCormack Road is not safe. I worry when I ride my bike along this section. Connecting to the rail trail safely will promote more and walking along this section to the Price Chopper plaza. THANKS!!!

Lowering the speed limit to perhaps 35 or 40 on bypass defeats its purpose of siphoning traffic off other roads. It was designed as limited access and no businesses or houses on it. A slower speed there will encourage more cutting through on Bridge, McCormack, and Maple. Do we really want to push more traffic onto those streets with all of the houses with pets and kids on them? A slower speed will increase travel times and cause more people to cut off the corner from by using McCormack. The Bridge St end of McCormack has a rise in the road there and visibility to poor. This is spot I worry about. Do we really want more cars traveling through there at 30-40 MPH? I turn left onto McCormack often so if coming from Delmar I get left as quickly as possible before the traffic speeds up and signal so people know I'm going to head left. People go around me and there is a turn lane to safely wait. I don't see the problem. If we really want eliminate all risk we can simply block off the end of McCormack coming from Bridge St. Than we just go via New Scotland. It might take an extra minute or so but eliminates all the through traffic on McCormack. I don't actually want this because if I think it might be hard to get onto the bypass due to snow I'll simply go via Bridge. I almost never do that because I never have any problem making the right onto the bypass.

I've been in the safety field for 30+ years and when I moved to Slingerlands 5 years ago was amazed that they would have a 4 lane road at 55 mph known as Cherry Ave Ext. It's extremely dangerous to take a left turn with limited visibility from the right when exiting and not enough room in the middle to take it in 2 stages. It's a fatality waiting to happen and fear for my safety and my young adult drivers. I also am a runner and at least 3 -4 times a week run along Cherry Ave Ext and must cross to get to the trail. I routinely stand in the middle of cars racing by at 55 mph. It's not safe and would appreciate if changes are made.

Cherry Ave ext is a very unsafe road with too high mph, poor entrances into road (should be lights or circles), and lack of pedestrian cross way and sidewalks. This has resulted in death and needs modifications.

I wouldn't call it a highway to "nowhere" but I agree that given where it does go to on either end, its characteristics should not be that of a "highway". Certainly the speed limit can be reduced and other appropriate signage installed immediately. Let's do something before instead of after for a change.

I fear for my safety every time I walk along the Slingerlands Bypass.

This 1960s highway design needs to be updated to accommodate safer turns and pedestrians

Long overdue, speed should have been reduced & turn offs reconfigured when round a bouts were installed. Thank You!
