I believe ESCC need to provide a safe place for pupils and the community to cross the busy A275. Safe access to school is s safe guarding responsibility and just as pupils at St Peter’s Chailey have a safe route to Primary - so too do pupils at Chailey Secondary School. It is a fundamental duty of care. ESCC needs to improve our lives and environment by providing a crossing, or underpass or overpass . It is a real danger at present and discourages walking and cycling to school.

The road is dangerous to cross on foot in particular during school start and finish times, with a huge traffic volume coming from three directions, large/heavy goods vehicles in the mix regularly , left turning/right turning vehicles blocking clear view across the road, it was an accident waiting to happen! How many more incidents do we need?

I regularly see students from the school (and others) running the gauntlet of the traffic. You don't get the chance to walk across, and have to get over as quick as possible.

I was horrified to hear that one of the pupils at Chailey had been hit by a car recently. My youngest daughter is at the school and my eldest left this summer. They have been safe travelling to school by bus or by car. But this incident has clearly highlighted that some pupils are on foot and need to cross a very busy road with very little time to time their crossing because of the speed of vehicles. I drive to Brighton along the same road most days and am very aware that the speed restriction is rarely kept to. And there is little awareness that there is a school near the road. I fully support this petition.

I was devastated to hear that a Chailey student had been hit by a car last week. My son has just started there and it's not something I ever want to hear of again. Children have a basic human right to be safe and I urge East Sussex County Council to take this into consideration and enable students to get to school safely every day.

This road is dangerous for our children to cross. A crossing should have been put in years ago. It shouldn’t take a serious accident for the council to acknowledge the need for a crossing!! There are children as young 11 crossing a main road where cars can be travelling at 60mph. I live in the village and can’t say I’ve even noticed a school sign in the a275 near the mill lane junction, it’s outrageous

A safe crossing on the A275 near Mill Lane or anywhere in South Chailey is long overdue. I am surprised there are not more accidents. My children also went to Chailey St Peter's and were given bus passes due to having to cross the A275 three times between our house and the school which was less than a mile away. There is no safe place to cross the A275 within South Chailey and it would benefit all residents from the youngest to the oldest.
