Katie Washington is a glowing example of what can be achieved with a strong Notre Dame education, and one who would serve faithfully on the Board of Trustees. Let's stand behind our 2010 valedictorian. Her viewpoints would be invaluable to the Board, furthering the education of our loyal sons and daughters in attendance at ND. Let's not stifle meaningful conversation at our university. Let's encourage many viewpoints from our accomplished alumni.

Have we vetted every person on the board to see if they are anti-war? Are we suggesting you HAVE to be Catholic to be on the board? Are we double checking that everyone on the board is living simply and devoting his or her life to the poor and needy? No- of course not. This is another example of reducing Catholic views to one single issue and one single political talking point. Ms. Washington is more than qualified and will do a fantastic job on the board - and unless we feel comfortable vetting every person to see if they fit into some idea of being "sufficiently Catholic" (and we shouldn't) we should embrace Ms. Washington and wish her the best in her role on the board.

Good luck Katie. It's a shame to see a deserving appointee have to deal with this kind of backlash and protest for expressing her pragmatic stance on a "controversial" topic. ND would be failing as an "institute of higher education" if they chose to exclude her from sitting on the Board. Take a lesson from your Pope and spend a little more time focusing on working towards a common good and less time excluding/condemning those with differing convictions.

(ND '05) How would the Board of Trustees, or ND community, be served by expelling Ms. Washington from the Board? Her viewpoints are informed by both a background of Catholic social teaching and a respectable degree of experience for someone her age. Unless there's some glaring aspect I'm missing, the need for this petition does not reflect well upon our spirit of Catholic scholarship.

Nothing is less Catholic than silencing diverse voices. Even when saints are canonized, someone plays the part of "devil's advocate" to make the strongest case against the beatified person as possible. Disagreeing with a highly controversial piece of Magisterial teaching (never received by the faithful, I might add) does not make one anti-Catholic.
