Well, if we're going to impose religious litmus tests on the Trustees, then I believe only those who have never used artificial birth control are allowed to remain in their positions. It's Catholic teaching after all. Let's see who's left.

How many Board of Trustees members (or their partners) have used artificial birth control? All of them, I bet. Well, that goes directly against Catholic teaching, so maybe the entire Board should be disbanded? Stop imposing these religious litmus tests. Not everyone needs to agree with every aspect of the Roman Catholic religion in order to faithfully and fully serve a great university like Notre Dame. For heaven's sake, the teachings seem to change daily anyway, depending upon what Pope is in charge.

The ideals behind our university are not consistent with the single-minded, knee-jerk calls to punish one Trustee for daring to disagree with the opinions of some alumni and lobbyists. If Notre Dame truly believes that its students and alumni form a family, then it cannot in good faith simply silence those family members who don't agree with a given position. The alumni community needs to try to remember that not every Domer thinks - or even believes - the same.

We have allowed other bright, dedicated men and women to occupy leadership positions at this university despite public views outside of Catholic Teaching (see: Condoleeza Rice).

I am proud to have Katie represent me on the Board of Trustees and it would be a disgrace to our alma mater if she is removed for her stance on this issue. The University I attended promoted thoughtfulness and tolerance for dissenting points of view and should continue to do so. If it only wants to support blind adherence to Catholic doctrine, it might as well shut down every school besides the seminary.

A university should be a home for different perspectives and a place where questioning is encouraged, not a place that suppresses viewpoints that differ from one dogma. As an alumni, I think Notre Dame's refusal to even sign a piece of paper that says they refused to cover contraception for an individual is disgraceful. But that aside, I find it disturbing that there are people who want everyone to fall in line with one set of views or have their voices silenced.
