As an early years worker I see how hard it is for these families who are being failed by the current system. There is little to no support for these children as the main stream schools just aren't equipped to cater for the diversity of their complex needs. I'm glad families are voices are now being heard and hope there can be a positive outcome to support all our children.

Having a child in the spectrum I fully agree with it all. There is a large gap in the education system for children with moderate/high functional autism.

I find this disgusting. I have an autistic son and also training to be a teacher. I'm going to make sure I do my best when I'm a teacher for autistic children

My son is now 24. I had an 18 mth battle with education back then despite him being one of the 'lucky' ones to be in an autism unit. The staff had no training, the curriculum was none existent. I had to give up my job of 20 yrs as a result. It not only affects the child's mental health but the mother's too as it is exhausting continously having to fight for what others take for granted and should be a right for all. I went into a school last week and did some autism awareness training for the staff. They were so grateful especially as they were learning from a mother with experience. Failed children become failed adults

I have just challenged Care Inspectorate to look into failing our autistic children. No reply yet (surprise)

I agree with this petition completely. These children are being failed. It is institutional child abuse, from the top down. Not intentionally, but if children are expected to be in school and are getting anxious, stressed, school refusing, self harming because the adults are not appropriately trained to meet their needs and the LA and DfE does not provide enough funding for appropriate specialist training and enough staff, it is abusive for everyone, children, parents and staff. The whole system is under funded, under specialised and under resourced. You would not expect to have brain surgery performed by a heart surgeon or a gynaecologist. Each area needs highly specialised training and experience and it cannot be rushed or things go wrong, people suffer, sometimes for life and it is a case of malpractice. All children need highly trained, experienced staff. The Government, DfE, LA, Head Teachers and Teachers all have a Duty of Care for the emotional and psychological well being of all children.

Working in education myself I agree that some children can cope in mainstream with the proper support but the need for more specialised units and schools is growing rapidly xx

This is not just happening in glasgow but also in surrounding areas. I am going through this now with my 5 year old son in Lanarkshire.

The whole country is being failed , our kids have not got needs led or education that meets their abilities, the staff have no idea how to help them the policies don't allow for proper funding or help to be in place. It's neglect, plain and simple under the remit of government.

This applies to more than just Glasgow. It is nation-wide.

I have had first hand experience of both our local mainstream Primary and High school failing both my ASD diagnosed son's over the past 8 years. As a result my children have missed their education, been excluded, suffered depression and mental health problems, and we have been sent to the Reporter Children's Hearing Panel and Sherriff Court (Scotland ).
