As a retired head teacher of a mainstream primary with a language unit for P1-3 attached I have been appalled to see the dilution of the support for these most vulnerable children. When challenged at a meeting regarding no longer identifying children for units but making presumption of mainstream when asked if we were not setting children up to fail the response was that we wouldn't know unless we tried!!!!! Gambling with children's education and support which was really a cost cutting exercise for me was totally unacceptable.

There is a boy in my daughter's mainstream class who is autistic. He is distressed, his mum is distressed, their teacher is struggling and the rest of the kids are affected too. He isn't able join in with the rest of the class in any meaningful way. It's clearly the wrong place for him and he is suffering. Mainstream may be right for some but it's certainly not for all. Children need to have their personal needs met, particularly the most vulnerable.

Each individual needs different level of overall care and should be took into consideration it not fair to the child if their personal centered care is not being met that why we have human rights

This is the worst fight , if only they took the time to understand our children's needs as they say 'get it right for every child ' they certainly haven't got it right for mine .

Mainstream is appropriate for some but not all autistic children particularly those who lack social skills and also have specific learning difficulties

Mainstream schools will only work for those with different abilities if their needs are fully supported and understood. Clearly this is not happening!....The decision taken that all children can/should be taught in mainstream comes from the minds of those who have no understanding of a differing ability, if the council truly wants every child to be treated equally then they need to put in the specialist additional supports to enable every child a chance to achieve their capability.

I don't feel schools have the support staff & opportunity to meet the needs of autistic children.
