What an amazing gift to the Lumin children this would be--to allow them to complete the elementary cycle together in a true Montessori environment and to reap the rewards of this visionary educational approach! The need is undeniable, and the benefits would be life-changing for so many.

Pending the results of a needs assessment and SWOC analysis, having this expanded option for families would be really lovely. Thanks for the good work you do.

I was am a committed Montessori parent whose son attended Sylvia Fitzgerald’s toddler Junius Heights Montessori program, he is graduating from Montessori Children’s House this year. We did receive a spot at East Dallas, and I am a big believer in the program, staff and leadership. However, I have not enrolled him primarily due to having to my vet him again in fourth grade. I also understand in conversations with staff at East Dallas that for many of the children going into their local public schools after completing the program, it is a very difficult transition.

I have two Lindsley alumni and one currently attended 3rd grade. It would be great if they would be able to extend to upper elementary. The school has been such a blessing to all three of my children.

We have two kids at Lumin now and if the program were to continue after 3rd grade we would be so grateful to continue there! The difficult truth is that because it does not go past 3rd grade, we are looking at applying for DISD Montessori and “choice” schools sooner than 3rd grade out of necessity — not out of desire — in order to have multiple years to attempt to win a seat in a good DISD school. We would be sad to leave Lumin prior to the natural transition after 3rd-grade. If the board would please consider discussing the option, and if the details could be worked out, expanding Lumin’s mission in this way would be like a dream come true for us parents and our kids!

I am an EDCS alumni and my two daughters currently attend Lumin. It’d be wonderful if they could expand the school. Finding a good and affordable school like Lumin is impossible.

I would absolutely keep my son at Lumin if there were an upper elementary option (he's in third this year, so we are looking at our options right now.) I wouldn't even have to think about it and wouldn't even consider other schools. The East Dallas Community School has been such a gift to him and our family and we feel lucky to have been a part of it.

We have seen our son and his classmates thrive in this program and would love him to continue in Montessori as long as possible--it suits him perfectly and provides a method of learning that is simply unavailable at traditional schools. As others have pointed out, Dallas is a difficult place to land a Montessori spot after third grade unless you are willing to shell out big money for a premium private school. The DISD Montessori options, while good, are extremely limited, particularly when trying to transition in for fourth grade, when most of those seats have been filled by children already in those schools. With that limitation, and with expensive private schools being untenable for most of the families who attend Lumin EDCS or Lumin Lindsley Park, extending one or both of those schools to include Upper Elementary would be incredibly beneficial to the kids, the families, and the surrounding neighborhoods.
