I cannot stress enough the amount of work and effort the organisers put into the recent Christmas market. It was a pleasure to sell at from beginning to end and the level of custom during the weekend is more than enough evidence of the importance of these events. Not only does it provide an opportunity for people to sell their products, it provides an avenue for social interaction for customers and vendors alike and helps businesses touch base with their peers - something that is constantly being moved away from with the popularity of online presence increasing for businesses year on year.

I want to buy local with the least packaging possible. Markets allow me to do this. For our environment would be great to develop more room for markets and green spaces.

weekend markets knit the threads which form the fabric which holds communities together. For many it is the financial and mental sustenance required to see another week through. Shred the fabric and we all fall.

Markets are the life of the city. They are essential for the development of a sustainable future for the city, as local commerce is the best way to keep jobs and create a stable economy. Not to mention the experience they offer is much more enjoyable than that of large chains! Please give them the protection they need, and an environment in which they can flourish!

We just had the opportunity to trade at the Dublin Flea Christmas market and on every level it was an amazing experience. It should be a permanent fixture providing an opportunity for small start ups and to support local economies not to mention the personal shopping experience for the customers who get the rare opportunity these days to meet the people behind the business. Markets are places where people connect on a human level and enjoy a real sense of community, a melting pot of creativity, innovation, food, chat and interaction. Hope the powers that be in the Local Authority can show some vision on this issue and look to other cities for encouragement. We need markets more than ever now with communities being torn apart with development. A city without markets is a city without a soul!

I’ve loved being part of the Dublin Flea Christmas Market. A market setting is a super way for a small beginning creative business to get a feel for their customer and get the word out. Good luck with this petition and I hope there’ll be another Christmas Flea next year.

It has been a HUGE loss to the local Dublin 8 community since the Sunday markets disappeared from Newmarket Square. Dublin City Council needs to start caring about the people, the local, small scale economies, and STOP prioritising profit and corporate entities over its own people.

I hate shopping centres; I find them stressful and cacophanous. I like friendly, neighbourhood markets, where I bump into friends and talk to stallholders, buy secondhand, vintage, artisan, handmade, local, unpackaged, locally grown, organic products, knowing that I’m directly supporting and being part of my community - plus they’re fun, colourful, vibrant, sociable and dynamic, allowing start-ups to find their feet or old things to find new homes, I can access them by bike, there’s no piped music and the food is fresh and tasty. What’s not to love? Newmarket Square has been a beloved part of my life and I’m so sorry it’s gone.
