Been through sids myself , out parents before headlines

We lost a son aged 4 months in 1981, though we suffered the usual grief as a family, we were given support from parents, friends, church, & community. I am shocked that this family have been treated so badly. I wish them all the best for the future.

Sick of the media prioritising sensationalism over ethics and morality. They quite happily destroy the fabric of society in pursuit of profits.

There is no reason any such investigation to become public knowledge until the authorities determine charges should be preferred.

I'm surprised this hasn't been done sooner, with SIDS being well known about! I admire that you are doing this now to help future families and I wish you the best of luck with this dedication to your son and everything in the future.

The press, and especially the gutter press, often behave appallingly towards private individuals who have little or no redress. In this instance, rubbish about 'press freedom' is nothing more than an excuse for intrusive sensationalistic reporting for the sake of profit.

I found this story deeply moving and disturbing. While I agree that the press should be allowed to report such deaths, I feel that they have a moral obligation to report accurately, not by embellishing it with misleading and inflammatory terms such as "child abuse" and "sexual offences". If the press cannot act morally then the must be obliged under law.

My nephew died of cot death aged 13 months. It was so traumatic for everyone. I can’t imagine how terrible it must have been for this poor mother to have to go through press invasion to this extent.

I am so sorry to hear that you have all had to experience the cruel consequences of such irresponsible, unnecessary and thoughtless reporting. Having to cope with the loss of a child through SIDS is in itself one of the hardest experiences that a family could have to bear. It should not be necessary to report this as a news item at all and could be notified in the appropriate column if that is what the family chooses. Thankfully some newspapers are more sensitive and do not behave in such an ignorant manner. I commend you for starting this petition and hope that you will be successful in having the law changed to ensure that this does not happen to any other family.

Sorry for your loss and ordeal. I believe infant deaths should not be reported until a cause has been established. Good luck with the petition.

Unless there is clear evidence of some sort of abuse, then families' identities should remain undisclosed until the conclusion of any investigation. It's very wrong to put people in a situation where they're being physically or verbally abused when they have done nothing to contribute towards the death of their infant and they should be allowed to go through the grieving process with dignity.

Sensationalism in the media to, essentially, increase website traffic without considering the consequences of their reporting on the welfare of the affected parties is irresponsible journalism. Unfortunately, this is present across all our media and is a generally accepted "practice" under the banner of press freedom. Really disappointing to see it present again in such a sad circumstance - guidelines on the responsible reporting of this specific circumstance should be easy enough to recommend. Just needs a body that cares about responsible journalism to enforce it.

The press should know better than to cause such distress to innocent families!

Although I don't feel you'll be able to prevent stories until "proven", something should definitely be done to hold the people reporting stories in this way more accountable for their actions. Sensationalist journalism is the reason I don't bother with 99% of the news outlets out there!

This is an appalling case of guilty until proved innocent and must not be repeated. Such cruelty at a time of indescribable is unacceptable.
