Disgraceful treatment

Mother of a SIDS baby 38 years ago. Cannot imagine how much worse it would have been ( if that were possible) with this kind of disgusting reporting.

Thank you for your bravery in sharing your story and putting this petition together. Losing a baby is heartbreaking without such awful unfair pressure through un-thoughtful and sensationalist reporting.

I cant even begin to imagine the pain of losing a child. And to then have the press even hint at foul play must be soul destroying. Xxx

I really hope this is made into law. It broke my heart reading about what Louies poor family went through after their little angel grew his wings.

As a father grieving the recent loss of my only son, I am 100% behind you. I'm so sorry to hear what they put you and your family through, I hope they come to realise what they have done one day. I also hope you achieve your aims and can take some solice in the changes you have set in motion. Lets hope future partents never even need to find out who helped them and why, as these reports would never happen in the first place. Much respect, Alan.

Let's end trial by media

I live in Central Scotland and lost my second and third sons suddenly and tragically . My second son was recorded as a cot death and my third son a rare form of sepsis . My whole world imploded and had it not been for my family and my oldest son who needed me, I would have ended this eternal pain. The police up here had a special unit and although they had to do all the investigations not at any point did I or my husband feel that we were under any suspicion and if anything felt supported by the family liaison officer. There was nothing in the press but living in a close knit community everyone knew but at all times supported us and shared our pain and grief. 17 years on since the death of my second son my heart still aches for the loss of my 2 beloved sons and I still suffer nightmares, and flashbacks to the days it happened. I had heard of it but thought that if we did everything to reduce the risk then it couldn't happen to us. I was wrong. How dare the media intrude in this families raw grief at the worst time of their lives and print sensationalist headlines with total disregard to the cruelty and pain they were inflicting to a family already suffering. This has to stop!

In the age of click bait media, when news outlets know that misleading readers with sensationalist reports will gain them better statistics and ad revenue, it is important to have safeguards in place to protect people who have lost a child. It is the most traumatic thing I think of. I would also like to see regulations to stop the press from using images of homes or individuals without direct and specific consent.

This should not even be open for discussion. The idea that a blameless parent could come under suspicion following the loss of a child is abhorrent. Clearly, an unexplained death must be investigated, but for the press to release details before the facts are known just highlights that there interests are not with it's reader, but with their circulation figures.

If you're named in the press you're guilty till proven innocent. This is wrong, I certainly would not want to be in the same shoes.

We lost a son to SIDS 36 years ago. It was unexplained then and is now. There is no reason why the press must report such incidents until it is clear that there really will be a police investigation. We were dealt with very sensitively then. The press needs to consider who’s interest it is protecting by immediate and distressing publication.

I strongly believe the government should protect families from the press releasing details of a child that has died of a cot death until after a full investigation has been completed.

I can not begin to imagine your grief. I fully support you and your petition.

I’m so incredibly sorry for your loss. I can’t even begin to imagine how distressing the subsequent news coverage was for you and your family. I truly hope this petition brings about a serious review on how sudden infant deaths are reported
