As if the loss of a child is not enough, we cannot let the press exacerbate the grief without concrete proof. Shame on them...

Yes, I support this. Newspaper's claim free speech to justify their reports when in actual fact they are frequently subjective and do not educate the reader in the standard procedure - such as in this case that every case of SIDS is investigated. There is little in the public interest to report a case of SIDS and to name the family unless the media are looking to apportion blame and promote a hidden agenda.

Families who go through this horrific experience should be allowed to grieve in peace. The Society of Editors may be correct,in that they have a right to report stories in the public interest but they do not have the right to publicly name suffering families or reveal their addresses. Show a shred of human decency.

Families need to be protected from the gutter press and misleading click bait story lines to just sell their rags. A law should be brought in that all facts and standard processes are clearly stated up front, before any of the misleading rubbish and viewpoints are quoted.

Families must be protected from adverse publicity at a time of loss.

It's unbelievable the press can do this after a family tragedy. They should not be allowed to publish such details until the matter is concluded.

This broke my heart! I do not understand why they feel this is in the public interest to publish so soon. No thought for the family or the harm they are doing, it also isn't printing the full facts therefore leading people to believe their may be wrongdoing. It's wrong on every level. Papers should be ashamed

The media shouldn’t report sensational and unsubstantiated speculation. They just never learn (phone hacking!). Any news I read I always assume I’m not being told the full story and its being sensationalised or exaggerated. The media talk about freedom of the press but they completely undermine themselves and the good work of true journalists who strive to report with integrity. If I wanted ‘drama’ I’d watch reality TV.

All unexplained deaths are investigated. That is not the issue. With personal experience of SIDS I know first hand how alarming the presence of the police can be - but reporting such as this is totally unnecessary and simply salacious.

My heart goes out to all parents grieving for a child. Their pain should not be made worse by media speculation. So, so wrong and unspeakably cruel.
