I completely agree. People should be able to marry whoever they want without losing critical benefits.

I have a brother with cerebral palsy who has been deeply injured by the SSA MARRIAGE PENALTY LAW. He lost his SSDI and Medicare. His wife passed & he couldn’t get his benefits reinstated.

Me and my husband just got married in October of 2020 and we are an hour away from being divorced in 2021 of March because of the Social Security Disability punishment act for people with disability not being able to be married and keep their benefits this is ridiculous and it needs to stop.

I hope this can change. I'm disabled and married in a similar but different situation with ssdi cutting my payments because of my husband's income and it's just even more stress and hurt on top of what I already have to live with. Much love.

There is no marriage equality until disabled individuals like myself can marry the ones we love without penalties that can greatly harm our physical being.

The ruling that a disabled person cannot marry without loosing their already established benefits is unfair and should be rescinded.

This is an outrage! And while we’re at it, we need to change the laws regarding people who were stay at home mothers their entire marriages, and then when left destitute and forced on SSI due to disability—which pays a pittance of only a few hundred dollars—are unable to ever live with someone within a relationship or marry someone w/o losing lifesaving health benefits. We should be able to get SSDI based disability based upon our husband’s work records, during marriage and after, especially after being married for decades! Forcing us on SSI, which we can only get once single, not only contributes to extreme poverty, it prevents us from ever marrying or being in a committed long-term relationship. Being a stay at home mother is very respectable work, and it’s time we benefit when we become disabled while doing it especially for when we ever get left due to being sick or just divorce for whatever reason!

In a time where marriage equality has been improving to vastly, it's time to include disabled people. You should not have to loose your income (which is far too small, though that's its own issue), as well as health insurance, just to marry. Marriage should be accessible for ALL, without having to put your lively hood, wellbeing, and even potentially life on the line.

This is classist and ableist. In this day and age there is no excuse for such barbarism.
