Dear Superintendent Copeland and LMSD Board,
Given the August 5th LMSD Board meeting vote resulted in the approval of a fully 100% virtual start of school on September 8th, we respectfully request the following:
- Creation of a Reopening Committee consisting of Board members, teachers and parent volunteers
- The Reopening Committee shall provide input to the internal Reopening Task Force
- The Reopening Committee shall provide opportunities for parents and medical professionals to submit comments and recommendations to the Reopening Committee.
- Establish the Reopening Committee by August 20, 2020.
- Furthermore, we request that medical experts in epidemiology and pediatrics work with the Reopening Committee to define the metrics required for in-person education by September 10th, 2020
- Provide for transparency to the Reopening Task Force and Reopening Committee members and a dedicated email for the public to reach these groups

Seeing this kind of movement is honestly spinning my head a little because I remember when there was just silence on the other end of the screen. It is really starting to feel like the district has to listen now since so many people are finally pointing out that we need actual transparency and clear goals for getting back into classrooms.

I don’t want the schools to open now. I am okay with keeping my kids home for the sake of health safety. I trust our teachers and school administrators and staff and understand the need to keep them and the students safe. However, I would like some transparency and clarity as to the thinking of the school board about how and when schools will open. The October date seems ludicrous, given current conditions. How will things progress this year?
Similar to the decision made to go virtual, a plan must be in place to return to school when the conditions are safe for all. If there isn’t a plan in place with defined milestones, how can we move forward? There is one condition that I ask you consider above all, the safety of the students, staff, teachers, and janitors.
I support this petition, and urge the Board members to consider that this is not one-stop shopping. The metrics for kids under 10 years old and for kids with special needs might be different than for older students.
Nearly every school-aged child will be in a learning pod this fall, thus still interacting with others and potentially spreading the virus. Therefore, closing schools has done little to mitigate virus transmission but instead has shifted the problem and liability to individual families. Families who continue to pay taxes for education while having to spend private funds on pod teachers and tutors who are becoming very costly due to high demand. A controlled smaller group environment in school, like the hybrid model, would be no different than a learning pod.
As an MD taking care of COVID patients, and a CEO working in biotech with visibility into drug and vaccine development, I would be happy to volunteer to participate.
Please open the schools.
