A few weeks back, we (Coffee For Your Soul) had the privilege to kick-off Black History Month 2021, with an interview with Lloyd "Tyke" Riddick to discuss an amazing accomplishment. He was the first to identify the Russian Spy Satellite, when he was stationed Darmstadt, Germany on October 4th, 1957. Mr. Riddick finally received recognition of his accomplishment in 2008 - 40+ years later. This petition is to help get Mr. Riddick in the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C.

We Must Not Forget Black History IS American History!

Updates

March 2, 2021

The stories shared by those who signed this petition clarify why chronicling Mr. Riddick's legacy remains essential. We are currently preparing formal documentation to submit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This effort seeks to ensure his contribution to space history is recognized on a national stage.

March 2, 2021

The steady growth of this petition highlights a widespread desire to see Mr. Riddick receive the national recognition he earned decades ago. This momentum encourages our efforts as we prepare to present this case to the museum.

I met Mr. Riddick by chance today in the hallway at the doctor's office. I liked him immediately when we began talking, he asked me if I knew about Sputnik and I said yes. Then he told me his amazing story of when he heard the radio signals from outer space. Young people today might not have heard of Sputnik, but it was a very big deal back during the Cold War years. The Russians got our military's attention, the Space Race was on and TYKE was the first to sound the alarm. He is an inspiration to us all. George Ruggiero Whitney Point, NY USA

As the son of the man who identified the Sputnik satellite signature, I would VERY much have appreciated to have learned this in school. We Americans proudly make much of the "cold war" and the "spce race", but constantly brush over the details that help flesh out these concepts and bring them to life. We are also constantly looking for ways to "promote scholarship and the love of learning" in order to motivate our kids. This is one such story, which serves the purposes of promoting at once the history of technology, the crucial contributions of African Americans in American history as well as world history. The inclusion of Lloyd Riddick's monumental achievement into the Museum's content can ONLY help to inspire our youth to believe, and achieve. Is that not what we want?
