Dear Mr Cameron, We are gravely concerned at the way the present Government has forced through the Lisbon Treaty without first consulting the people by a National Referendum - which it promised to do. We are acutely aware of the serious implications this Treaty could have upon us as a nation. For instance the consequences of a foreign power having jurisdiction over our long-established laws and liberties are unknown - but likely to be very unwelcome. As the Leader of the main Opposition party we are therefore appealing to you with a request that you make an immediate public statement that should you at the next General Election be able to form the new Government you will undertake to hold a Referendum at an early date to determine the nation\'s approval or otherwise of the Treaty. Further, that in the event the Lisbon Treaty is rejected by a simple majority, your Government will take the necessary steps to withdraw the United Kingdom from the Treaty at the earliest opportunity.

The scale of this response confirms the necessity of our demand for a public mandate. I am currently finalizing the formal letter to the Leader of the Opposition to ensure our request is delivered personally to his office.

We were promised a vote on this and our voices were completely ignored. Time to give the power back to the people.

Disgraceful. No one voted for this and we should have had a say years ago.
