I agree - monster homes and poor city planning in Richmond - does not fit in with existing neighbourhood or neighbours. No one lives in the homes. Dark and isolated streetscape.

To local Vancouverites, It appears clear to me that all 3 levels of government refuses to do anything on this topic of FOREIGN INVESTMENT or off-shore money. It is clear that HOT money has flooded the real estate market in Vancouver where locals cannot afford a decent living. Recently, our PM Justin Trudeau has refused to do anything on foreign investment stating we need them. I understand that foreign investment creates job however, the jobs they create for local people does not allow them to purchase a home. It wages are too far off. It is such a shame that our government only wants to look at the books. FINTRAC which is ran by the federal government in money laundering prevention has turned a 'BLIND EYE' on over 90% of suspicious transactions. Furthermore, as we have seen recently, the BC Assessment will be raising our property taxes. This is only the beginning of the trickle down effect. Not only will we be PRICED OUT, we will be TAXED OUT. Also, for all current owners, your little ones will be affected, you niece and nephew will not be able to afford anything in the city, your friend's children will be in the same boat. We need to collect data of how much foreign money is coming into Vancouver!! We need data to show which properties are being sold with foreign money. We need data on empty houses!! We are paying income taxes where foreign appears to find loopholes in the system. I urge everybody who is concerned about the housing market to spread the news to friends and neighbours and e-mail or write and sign the petition to the government about your concerns and how foreign money has affected your life, your quality of life, your ability to raise a family where you grew up, your longer commutes, to work, etc. We need to continue to pressure all 3 levels of government! We need to put pressure on the provincial, federal governments banks, realtors & notaries to stop foreign money laundering and tax evasion.

Long overdue.

Action is needed. And Gregor and Rennie's "speculation" tax is NOT the answer. It would actually make things worse by limiting supply.

Limit ownership to those who have Canadian citizenship only. One household .. one home.

Absolutely agree. If Sydney, London, Hong Kong can do something about it so should Vancouver. The action or non action of the current government on this issue will strongly influence how vote on the next provincial election. Maybe if other people do the same maybe the next government will do something about this issue.

Limiting foreign ownership putting restrictions on it will make a big difference it should've been done in 1985 but better late than never BC government is not too late to say sorry as the song says

After years of politicians talking I have realized that they don't want action because they know where their money is coming from. But the social consequences of this are very serious. People need to be heard on this!

I'm sure you will just call me a fool/hick/moron for pointing this out... but we live in a regulated free market. Those regulations include prohibiting child labour, ensuring workplace safety, ensuring environmental protection... things that make Canada a great place to live. The money that is flooding our market was earned without any such restrictions. You want a free market... move to one of those disgusting places and stop being such a dick here.

Sigh...I was on a work computer. The servers are in Edmonton. Grew up in Lynn Valley, went to UBC, now live near in SE False Creek. Please stop posting on this board. I'm not sure whether you're a troll or just incredibly arrogant, but your username offends me as someone from Vancouver.
