We, the undersigned, are petitioning the State of New York to install a traffic light located at the intersection of Staples Street and Conklin Streets in Farmingdale, New York. Additionally, we are demanding on-street parking be restricted on the southern side of Conklin Street between Van Cott and Staples Streets.

The installation of a traffic light will deter motorists from speeding and creating hazardous conditions along Conklin Street. Speeding and dangerous driving along this road has resulted in multiple auto accidents, with the most recent occurring on May 10, 2014, taking the lives of five and critically injuring two others. Additionally, while cars are parked along side Conklin, motorists do not have a clear view of oncoming traffic while making left-hand turns from the side streets (such as Van Cott, Oakview and Staples Streets) onto Conklin Street. This has also resulted in numerous auto accidents.

Updates

May 14, 2014

I have submitted a formal request for a traffic safety audit to the Department of Transportation regional office. This documentation cites the specific intersection visibility issues and accident history outlined in our petition to support the engineering study required for a new light installation.

May 14, 2014

The scale of this support has secured us a formal meeting with the Department of Transportation next week. I am currently finalizing the document package that outlines the specific sightline obstructions at the intersection for their review.

So many accidents at this spot. We cant keep ignoring how dangerous that intersection is. Fix it before someone else gets hurt.

Used to live right by there and it is a complete nightmare. People fly down that road like it is a highway. Need a light now.

TRAGIC. My heart breaks for those families. Put the light in already.
